Who: Bill and Lavender
What: Surprise! We’re getting married!
When: Sunday
Where: Bill’s then the Ministry
Rating / Status: Low-ish. Some kissing. | Complete!
Lavender had spent the previous night over at Bill’s, and despite waking up alone in his bed this morning, she was quite happy. Well. As happy as she could be, considering nothing really happened and Bill was still worried about his sister’s attack and well being (understandably). Upon waking up, she returned back to her own flat and spent a part of the day lounging around. She didn’t have any plans, save for maybe a little bit of shopping. She was still excited about looking at what could possibly be her and Parvati’s new shop the day before, and getting to spend a few hours with Julie the day before that. She had told Bill she would be back over to his house later that night, since he had promised her a date. She dressed nicely, finally having an opportunity to show off a little. He hadn’t seen her dressed very well yet, so in a weird way, this seemed a little important.
Flooing over to his place, she wasn’t really sure he’d be home yet. Lavender brushed the soot off of her pants and looked around. “Bill? You home yet?”
---
For the last week now, Bill Weasley had been a single man. His divorce had been finalized and was over and done with. Fleur Delacour was out of his life, minus the fact that she had returned to London. But that was no matter. He was single and didn’t have to worry about her any longer. The rest of the week, well, awful. His sister had been abducted and tortured and Mum had been a fucking wreck over it. Most days Bill was with his parents at the Burrow, trying to keep himself sane. He suddenly found himself in an odd situation. He didn’t trust a member of his family. Harry had Bill worried and he was starting to hate the idea of his sister being with him. It didn’t seem safe and women should be safe. They should be looked after, not put in danger. And then an idea started to form.
Bill was always a rash man, but he was pretty sure his latest idea was his rashest and most outrageous yet. And that said something. But from when Lavender told him how much she wanted to adopt her daughter and his new found desire to make sure everyone ever was safe, Bill’s idea was growing rapidly as the days ticked by. And it wasn’t going to go away until he did something about it.
He understood, now, that marriage didn’t have to be about love or romance. He’d married for love before and it hadn’t worked out. This time around he was going to marry so he could help someone. That’s all this was, with the added benefit of enjoying sex with his (hopefully) soon to be wife.
He got home around six, washed up and sat down in his bedroom. Once he heard Lavender come back, Bill stood up and walked to the stairs, looking down. “Up here,” he said.
---
Upon hearing his response, Lavender made her way over to the stairs. At the landing, she smiled up towards Bill. She was happy, genuinely happier then she had been in a while. She’d been all smiles for the past two days since seeing Julie, gushing about the little girl and the things they had done in the few hours they had gotten together. Sure, Bill’s divorce had just been finalized only a few days ago, and his sister was still in the hospital, and of course Lavender was worried about her, despite the fact that Ginny might not have been her biggest fan at the moment, for obvious reasons, but she couldn’t help but continue to smile at everything.
“How are you?” She really didn’t know what to expect. What did someone say to the person they were sleeping with who was now divorced and their sister had just been tortured and you couldn’t help but just be happy for completely different reasons?
Ascending the stairs, she kept her smile on. If nothing else, she didn’t have to pretend to be happy and perky and whatever. When she reached the top, Lavender leaned in and kissed Bill. “How did today go?”
---
Slipping an arm around her, Bill returned the kiss lightly. “Better/.” It’s not like the day could be great. But Ginny was alive and Bill would much have his mother fussing over someone than worrying that they were dead. And Bill had been able to go into work for awhile to catch up on everything he’d been missing, which was nice. Plus, he could take Lavender on a date, even though he had to talk to her about something first.
“You look nice,” he said and led them down the stairs to the living room. “I wanted to talk to you about something, okay? You have to promise to be open minded though.”
---
Lavender leaned into his arm, sighing a little at their kiss. “Good.” At least things weren’t so crappy anymore. Ginny was alive and she would be physically healed because St. Mungo’s was fantastic for that. And, well, better was good, compared to anything else.
“Thank you,” Lavender smoothed out her shirt, fidgeting a little with the hem as he led her back down the stairs and started to talk. “Oh, am I in trouble?” She frowned and bit her bottom lip, looking away. She couldn’t remember doing anything wrong, but she rarely knew these days. She seemed to be getting in trouble for everything. “What’s wrong?”
---
Her question confused Bill. Sitting down on the sofa and pulling Lavender onto his lap, Bill caught her chin with his hand and forced her to look at him. “Why would you be in trouble?” His other hand rested on her waist and Bill brushed a kiss against her cheek. “Nothing is wrong. Just want to run an idea by you.” It was a crazy idea, but she was another Gryffindor. Surely she’d agree.
“I want to help you get your daughter. And you said it was because you weren’t married so.. let’s go get married. You’d have someone to sign the papers with you, you’d have the money to cover any expense and it’s not like they have to know we aren’t really married. Legally we will be.”
Bill watched her face carefully, waiting to see what her reaction would be. He didn’t want to tell her that he’d also be keeping her safe, but maybe she knew. If she knew him at all, that was.
---
It was harder to keep the frown on her face when she knew she wasn’t in trouble, but she’d been told before that her pout was cute, and, well... Who didn’t want to be cute when they didn’t know what was going on? “I don’t know. I just seem to be all the time these days.” She never did anything correctly, but she blamed that on the Gryffindor in her. She jumped into things and didn’t always think them through all the time.
But this? This was different. Marriage? Marriage was, well obviously not a forever thing, as Bill was already divorced, but Lavender had never pictured herself just marrying for the heck of it. She might have done some slutty things with her life, but Lavender did really believe in love, in marrying for love and really being with someone. “I... What?” She shook her head, unsure if she’d really heard him correctly.
Lavender wasn’t sure what to say, what to do or how to react. “You were... You just got a divorce... A week ago. And... What?” This was kind of huge! And crazy!
---
Bill smirked at her, shaking his head a little. “If you seem like you’re in trouble all of the time lately, maybe you need to work on that, yeah?” He pressed a quick kiss to her cheek and grinned. Bill knew a thing or two about being in trouble, but he also knew when enough was enough.
“If it’s the best way to get your daughter to you rather than stuck in some orphange, yeah.” Bill knew it was a big deal, but at the same time it seemed like a really logical decision. They’d get married and play happy husband and wife long enough to get Lavender her daughter. Bill didn’t care much about finding real love again. He’d done it once and it burned him pretty badly. But he sure as hell didn’t want some kid to be without a mother when there was one trying so hard to be there. That didn’t seem right at all.
“Technically I got a divorce months ago. It just finished this week. And if you don’t want to get married, we don’t have to.”
---
“Perhaps,” she grinned and leaned back into Bill, shifting in his lap.
Honestly, Lavender loved that Bill called Julie her daughter. No one else referred to her as Lavender’s daughter, and while they certainly weren’t blood related, Lavender felt like no one else was as suited to be that little girls mother like she was. No one else could possibly love Julie like she did, save for the girls biological parents who had died for her in the war. She was trying to work through this in her head, try to come up with some logical response as to why this was just ridiculous. There were hundreds of them, like that they had only just met a couple of weeks ago, but it all came back down to the fact that Bill wanted to help her get Julie.
“Are you serious? Bill, this is... This is big. And what about... It’s going to take months to actually get her. And, we have to be married during that time. Everyone has to...” Lavender shook her head and let the rest of her words drop off. She really wasn’t one to do things logically. “You’re serious? You aren’t going to take this back?” Lavender didn’t wait for his answer before she was turning and kissing him hard on the lips. “Let’s get married. For Julie.”
---
Returning the kiss eagerly, Bill wrapped both of his arms around his new fiancee and hugged her close. He loved seeing the look on her face. The surprise mixed with excitement. It was a good look and every man should have the chance to make a witch look like that once in their lives. Bill was going to remember that look.
“Not going to take it back. We can get married today, if you want. I’m legally a single man. The ink is dry on the parchment, even if it just barely. We can tell the world that I couldn’t wait a second longer before you were my wife.” Bill could actually come up with a couple of reasons why he rushed to marry Lavender. He could tell everyone he wanted to make sure she was safe. He could explain to people that he didn’t like being alone. Then again, Bill didn’t feel the need to explain himself to anyone. This wasn’t about rushing off to marry someone, this was about creating a way for a child to have a good home.
Hell, even his mother would have to understand that one.
---
Lavender was all smiles, again. Their first date had turned into marriage, which was kind of hard to wrap her head around, but she’d figure it out. She was going to marry Bill. It was wonderful and perfect and she was completely greedy for agreeing to this because she wanted Julie that much. She could pretend. Everyone already knew she was sleeping with him. Everyone knew that she was crazy and this could be something she would do.
Pulling back from Bill, she laughed a little, a hand on his chest. “Today?” That was fast, but, wow. She couldn’t say no. Pressing kisses all over his face, Lavender nodded. “Now. Let’s go now.” She really wished she could say she loved him, that would have been perfect, but it would have been a lie. She liked him. A lot. Enough to marry him on a whim. She could pretend though. “I have to owl Parvati though. I think she’s upset with me and I need her to be there.”
---
He hesitated for a moment. Having Parvati there meant he’d have to explain to his family why a giggle girl could be there, but he hadn’t invited any of them. Fuck. Bill nearly told Lavender no, but couldn’t bring himself to say it. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d dealt with his family being angry at him and Bill doubted it’d be the last. Besides, most of them were busy and preoccupied with Ginny. He’d explain every thing to Charlie later that night. Or maybe he should just owl Charlie and have him show up. Yeah. That was probably the best idea.
“You owl Parvati, I’ll send a quick note to Charlie and we’ll pop over to the Ministry.” Bill grabbed some parchment from a desk in the living room and scribbled off a quick note. His owl, Horus, came flying into the house with a small whistle from Bill. He waited for Lavender to finish her note, gave them both to Horus and summoned his boots to pull on.
“Okay, Mrs. Weasley. Into the floo with you.”
