I'm not sure why, or for what reason the Ministry has asked me to do this, or why, for that matter, why the Ministry has not released a statement yet to this point regarding the raid the night before. I suppose it's hard to put into the right words what to say in a moment as dark and tragic as this. Not even the greatest speech writers, poets, and musicians of the world could find something powerful enough to convey just the tragedy of the moment we all find ourselves in; however, today, I do not claim to have those words, but do hope that in some sense, I can convey in a small fraction the depth of the sacrifice four Aurors made in service of their countrymen, the law, and those whom they cared the deepest.
No one man, nor woman, nor beast, nor creature, nor sapient being can ever claim to have done everything in their living power to provide for those they love the dearest. Not one person in this world, this universe, this existence we all know and understand can possibly hope to achieve the pinnacle of life in its highest emotional, spiritual, and moral sense. Not one living being can claim the importance of their lives: it is only in death where one can truly express their greatest achievements.
We have all lost someone completely dear to us, someone whose life meant our very existence, whose reach was far greater than the horizon could show. In each death we have watched as hearts are shattered, dreams lost, and so much that we hold dear completely evaporate. Yet death is at its hardest when it comes to someone so young, so amazing, so ... incredibly far reaching as the four persons that were killed a few short nights ago.
These four Aurors survived a war of terrible cost and tragedy, only to sign up to continue fighting, to prevent a third war from ever reaching our homes again. These four Aurors were, are, and always will be the pinnacle of what human morality can be--they were soldiers, warriors, martyrs of peace and equality. They sacrificed countless hours, days, weeks, months, and years in order to serve you, to provide you the greatest of life as they possibly could.
Each man and woman who died were incredible people. They were a loving friend, a shoulder to cry on, a man whose heart you cherished, a loving wife, a supportive sister, an inspirational brother. They were fathers, they were sons, they were us, yet they went beyond what any of us had asked of them. They went to war with tyranny, persecution, and intolerance; they fought and destroyed the fabric of society that continues to infest our darkest corners. They were the soldiers in the night, sitting on the outskirts of our cities and towns, ready to defend us when our way of life was threatened.
In the end they made the ultimate sacrifice that no one should ever have to make, that no one ever asked them to make--they did it of their own volition. Their own spirit, their own strength, it was their own bravery that sent them into battle. One died pushing a fellow Auror out of the way, the other stood above two injured before he was gunned down. Each sacrificed their hearts and minds to this task, and as unfortunate as the result was their bravery and courage should never ever be forgotten again.
They were many things, but to me they were partners, friends, allies, and in some sense a family. They are part of a brother and sister hood of Aurors that I hold to the highest regard. It is because of this, that I will stop at nothing to bring justice to those responsible. While the Potion's Ring was torn down, there still exists evil in this world.
It is with my solemn vow to you, to your loved ones, and above all to those four, that I will renew my efforts and the efforts of this office to hunt down and bring to justice each and every last Death Eater, including the ones let go on 'technicalities'. With the backing of the Minister and of the Head of the Aurors, I have been appointed Assistant Director of the Aurors, and Chief Death Eater Investigator. It is with the utmost sadness that I take this role in the shadow of such great men, but with great pride that I take this role to serve their memories. The Death Eaters, those who have evil intentions, the darkness of this world will be brought to a close and I solemnly swear to you: justice will finally be served.
For Andrew Kirke, for Geoff Hooper, for Elizabeth Dempsey, for Michael O'Brien, I will forever miss you and I thank you for your sacrifice. I know that above all else, there are those who will keep you in their memories and they will always love you. For those most affected by your loss, my love is with you, and while this statement will not ease your wounds, know that the message is not some PR stunt, it is from my heart.
I love you all. Thank you Kirke, Hooper, Dempsey, and O'Brien. It is for you that our rally cry in the Aurors will always be: "Remember the Four".
