Rae's laugh was probably louder than it should have been when he ran with her flash mob joke. "The only sad thing about that is that it would be both unsafe and redundant to be in a zombie flash mob nowadays," she mused. It was a risky joke, but it was true enough. Aside from the fact that zombies were everywhere nowadays and they weren't so original, there was the fact that anyone crazy enough to dress like a zombie would probably be shot on sight.
"The way I see it," she started calmly, looking down at the rim of her liquor bottle, "we have few shreds of humanity left, you know? Emotions, good or bad, are one of the things that separate us from them…" she said, raising her eyes and glancing at him again. "I know normal's a pretty far stretch, but I feel like it's better for me and people around me if I hold on to what I can."
It was a little Hallmark and she knew it, but she didn't care.
When her eyes went from the bottle in her hand and back up to him again, she realized that she'd gone on for too long about how close her family was. She would've apologized, but he hadn't brought to attention any need for her to apologize. "I'm lucky, I know that," was all she said instead. He explained that he was looking for his brother, then went on to explain the situation and she thought for a second. "David Zimmerman, hm? I don't know," she told him honestly. "It's possible, you know? I encounter a lot of people both in this safehouse and otherwise. Tell me a little bit about him, maybe that'll clear things up." Admittedly, it was only half to get information, because Rae really did encounter a lot of people. The rest was just to get him to open up a little. Rae was incurably nosy.
He told his story about the bold old lady in the nursing home and she laughed again. "Man, people always see the elderly as a group of cane-hugging hunchbacks, but they forget that they were just as lively as we were once. And they don't always let it go, do they?" she smirked wryly. "I always envisioned myself as one of those crazy story old people."
Just figured that most of her stories would involve undead wretches now.
"Well then, follow the leader, if you will," Rae smirked as she stood up and lead the way toward the side exit that led to the rooftop.
