He should've been relieved, hearing her say that she would escort them to safety. In essence, he was, but at the same time there was a part of him that hated relying on someone else to rescue him. Nor was he quick to forget that this Immune was on her own. He knew they had been trained to handle themselves from the day they discovered their immunity to the virus, and some long before they were even bitten, but even the greatest training in the world couldn't keep them from making one tiny mistake. More physically adept Immunes than this one had fallen to their deaths because of stupid and small missteps.
However, his smile revealed none of his misgivings, such was his eagerness to get himself and his companions away from this vulnerable position. Negativity would only keep them here longer.
Elliot followed the blonde's gaze down to Aaron and Mariam, his own eyes searching for some indication that Aaron had snapped out of it. His youth allowed for some slack in dealing with feelings of utter hopelessness, but if it threatened to get them killed, that's where it crossed Elliot's line of tolerance. Aaron seemed aware now, strapping on the backpack he had dragged onto the roof with him, and tugging his hood over his head.
There was no need to sign a translation for Mariam either, from the way her eyes glistened as she gazed up at the blonde. She climbed to her feet and hugged the Immune. "Thank you," she said, causing Elliot's eyebrows to rise. He'd never heard Mariam speak before, though he had interacted with her quite a bit at the church.
There were more important things to focus on, however. The Immune was instructing them now, pointing them toward the safest route. Elliot nodded as he tugged his backpack on and slung his medical bag over his shoulder. Sparing those precious few extra seconds to get their possessions on the top of the bus could have been a fatal folly, he realized. None of them had wanted to leave the last of their belongings behind; too much had been lost already.
When the blonde mentioned the infected still in the area, Elliot took notice of them, as well. While New York did seem to have the safest safe zones in the country, it also seemed to have the highest concentration of undead. Fight off one and another dozen wouldn't be far behind.
She told them to head for the ladder, then, and Elliot quickly signed the plan to Mariam, who nodded and gathered up her things, walking with Aaron toward the hood of the bus. Elliot turned to follow them, glanced back at the Immune. So many people fought to regain normal lives, and yet he didn't even know half their names.
"What's your name?" He asked. If she was going to risk her life to help him, he should at least know her name.
