Jon laughed as he set his glass down and picked up his fork again. Yes, she did talk about school all day. But he was used to it. School was a good subject though, he was a teacher after all.
"Assistant teaching is awesome," he looked at her. He couldn't get over how beautiful she was. How perfect she was. How he was the luckiest man in the world to have scored such a wonderful woman. "I had loads of fun doing mine. So I'd definitely recommend it."
He paused long enough to eat a couple more bites as she talked about the fact that they really needed to plan the wedding. They hadn't really had much time to work on it thus far. Distance had played a main factor in that. They could work on some of the plans while he was in town. He had a couple weeks off to work with as he'd told her on the phone before he flew out.
He laughed again and shook his head slightly. "I'm going to get an earful. Probably mostly in Chinese from your mother about how her daughter is so headstrong but doesn't know what's best for her. And how things were when she was your age. Be ready to translate horrible Mandarin from my end in return."
Jon loved Mei, she was a sweet lady. He'd taken to learning more Chinese so he could talk to Lixue's family more. Most of what he'd learned was Lulu's doing. His pronunciation was laughable at best, but he was stubborn enough to keep trying. Mei always joked that Jon wasn't Chinese enough for her daughter, but had grown to at least accept him. She was letting him marry her daughter, that meant she liked him right?
"I'm cool with doing things ourselves," he replied mentally doing the math. It was a good thing that they hadn't set a date yet. Jon was working on a teacher's salary, but more than willing to give Lixue the wedding she wanted, even if it did break him for years to come. William and James had offered some financial help, though he wouldn't tell Lulu, even if she threatened to pound it out of him.
He glanced out the window to see what she was looking at. He sighed slightly as she mentioned him being there more. This wasn't going to go over well.
"If I could get a job offer out here, I would jump it in a heartbeat. You know that. But I've got to go where the money is, and right now, that's in Springville."
He stopped and strategically popped another bit of chicken in his mouth. And I like it there, and I really think you would too if you would give it a chance. But I don't want to drag you away from school for my selfish reasons. That's not fair to you.
