No matter how welcoming Evan was to having her visit this night, Leah still held a few misgivings over the fact that he wanted her there on the night he was "celebrating" his anniversary. The irrational side of her brain was telling her that it was inappropriate to join him on the day Evan and his wife used to celebrate together. Adversely, the rational side of her brain was saying that Evan wanted the emotional support and, were Leah in his place, she wouldn't want to spend the night alone either. She half expected to get to Evan's room and have the door slammed in her face because he'd changed his mind and didn't want her around. That was the pessimist talking again. She never could take a good thing for what it was. This night wasn't about her. It wasn't about her pain, and she was slightly relieved by that. Not that she wished that it was Evan instead of her, but it was a welcome change to be the person comforting, rather than the person needing to be comforted. George and Danny were supposed to be spending the day with their mourning brother. The night was Leah's. He wouldn't have to be alone at all, unless he wanted to be. She wondered if Evan's siblings knew that she was coming to spend time with him tonight, and if they did, what sort of questions they asked about the changing relationship. For the time being, Leah put those thoughts aside as she followed the grassy path that led from her building to the administration building. It was a much shorter distance than the time it took to go from Madison Square to Grand Central. She didn't miss either of those places at all. To her, those buildings were the prisons. She came to a stop outside Evan's bedroom door and raised her hand to knock. They'd exchanged room keys, but she didn't quite feel comfortable yet letting herself into his room. With her luck, her unannounced entrance would happen while he was changing clothes. Maybe not uncomfortable for him, but if the scenario was reversed, she'd feel a little embarrassed. Taking a breath and then exhaling it, Leah tapped softly on the door with her knuckles. "It's Leah," she called, mentally preparing herself for what she might see when the door opened. |
