WHO: Cutter and Rodeo
WHEN: April 14, 2019
WHERE: New York Public Library
WHAT: Heavy conversation and even heavier drinking
RATING: Medium
STATUS: In progress
Ever since Adelaide had told him about what she had read in the journal Cutter carried, Rodeo had been wondering how exactly he was going to address the matter with his friend. It wasn't easy for them to simply sit down and hash out their feelings-- they were men, and men kept things close to the vest. The both of them were notorious for being bad talkers when it came to their own personal blues, so Rodeo wasn't sure that any attempt he made to help Cutter get his guilt off his chest would be successful. Still, Rodeo was concerned by what Adelaide told him she had read, and he knew he had to at least take a crack at getting Cutter to open up about it. Some things just couldn't be kept under lock and key without festering and poisoning a man's heart. Rodeo could hardly imagine having to continue on if he lost Charlie the way Cutter had lost his girl.
When they were first reunited, Cutter had told him about Mona, but the conversation had been fairly brief. It wasn't that Rodeo had forgotten about it, it was simply that he was dense enough to take it for granted that his best friend was fine. Once Adelaide had called his attention to it, though, that seemed beyond foolish. After what Cutter had been through, it was surprising that he was capable of functioning at all. It was surprising he was even still alive. Rodeo wasn't sure he'd have had the same strength, especially before he had reunited with Adelaide and Sarge-- if Charlie had died when she was all he had, Rodeo doubted he would have continued on for very long. The fact that Cutter had made it long enough for them to find each other was a miracle in and of itself.
His heart was heavy and his stomach churned as he made his way to the loft that Adelaide and Cutter shared with the man they called Silent Bob. He held a gift bag covered in glittery pink bows, containing his gifts for Cutter-- a book he had read recently and enjoyed (The Heart is a Lonely Hunter), a can of tactical bacon, and a bottle of Johnny Walker Black. He had a bottle of Bulleit with him, not about to show up to a drinking date without one of his favorite bourbons. He figured that the alcohol would help them both open up enough to talk, and then hopefully help them forget that they had done it by morning.
"Know you're real sore about me cuttin' my hair," Rodeo smirked when he came up on Cutter, carelessly dropping the bag of gifts he brought onto his friend's bedroll. "I tried gettin' Shortcake to give me a rat tail, but you know she couldn't let herself be related to no one sportin' a poor man's mullet."
