Bridget stared out of a 3rd floor window of the library with one hand on the swell of her stomach, overlooking what used to be Bryant Park. She used to love coming out there in the spring when she was in college, right when it was starting to get warm. Like most of the other teenage girls she knew at the time who had a decent body she hadn't hesitated getting into the shorts, tank-tops, and sandals, and doing a little sunbathing out on the grass. It accomplished the twin goals of getting a bit of a tan and showing off the hard work over the winter that kept her looking fit and trim.
That time seemed much longer in the past than the three or four years it had been since everything really started falling apart. The park had changed and so had she. Now the once immaculately kept lawn was well on its way to reverting to woods, covered with scrub brush and young trees just beginning to hint at the growing season to come. Her body, once fit and toned, was turning softer and more rounded by the day. The pregnant body she'd tried so hard to hide for weeks was now blatantly obvious to anyone who looked at her and Bridget wondered how she'd managed to get away without discovery for so long.
Rae's comment about the danger to her baby if she were bit had really struck home and she felt a sense of shame as she glanced down at her stomach. Staying out there as long as she had once she found out had been foolish and irresponsible. Still, she wasn't looking forward to spending the spring and summer cooped up in safehouses, and couldn't help worrying about what the future held. If only Jason had survived...
Her train of thought was interrupted at the sound of sneakers against the tile floor coming into the room.
