A beautiful day, really.
Perhaps not the sort of day a person would want to spend indoors, if this weren't the apocalypse; but Eloise found it rather easy to forget how much she enjoyed the sun on her skin or the wind in her hair if she had a book in front of her to read. Most of the time.
Lessons with Rory had given her a kind of focus -- something to hold onto when things were confusing, something that sharpened her, made her eyes bright. She looked forward to coming in and learning or practicing, or even simply discussing what had already been taught; it made her feel useful in a way that seemed somehow grounded and realistic. Biology and medicine were like a set of rules that you could learn, apply to anything. It was lovely.
Today was a hard topic, though. Ellie had busied herself taking notes from an anatomy book, unable to keep from connecting what she read with what she had been seeing in her own research -- this made the goings slow, and her hands were growing cramped from such earnest paragraphs. Rory's son was here today, too, which was distracting -- though she couldn't help smiling down at him now and again. Children had such energy.
After about half an hour, Eloise looked up from the book for good, rubbing at her eyes. "I don't know if I'm entirely clear about--"
"Stuff!"
The sudden intruder received no reaction from Ellie apart from an interested glance. It was a shorter man with scruffy blonde hair and hard, inquisitive eyes; he had a box in his arms, somehow having approached them without being noticed. When he met Eloise's gaze he grinned loosely, jostling the cargo, and set it down roughly on the table as if not aware of the books and papers underneath.
"Fresh off the truck, it's stuff," he told them. "Medic stuff, or somethin'. I dunno."
