Evan did his best to ignore the dead body and the way Rodeo picked it clean. It was a good idea, though maybe a little discretion would have been welcome. But unlike Leah, Evan didn't voice or put any expression behind his disdain for the action. He was already sort of distracted. Admittedly, now was probably not the time to be imagining what the place could be like given the proper nurturing, but Evan had never been known for his timing. He felt the right side of his mouth tugging up in a vague smile as he looked out over the long prison yard. To him, it wasn't just a hole, it wasn't just a prison. It was symbolic. Freedom. A fresh start. Safety for him, everyone he cared about and everyone they cared about. So maybe the timing wasn't right, but it was hard to tamp a little surge of self-pride at exactly what they were doing here.
Charlie's words caught his attention and he pulled himself from his reverie, turning to look at her and nodding his head. "I noticed that too," he said casually, "I saw a couple leapers skittering around nearer to the main doors, they're who we're gonna have to watch for when we're heading over there."
This place is looking better by the minute, Evan nodded his agreement with Charlie and smiled a little bit. "Didn't seem real until now," he admitted. "Now it sort of hit me. What we're doing. Feels good. Right..." he muttered arbitrarily as he headed for the balcony area to get a better look at their surroundings when they headed out the other side. "It's odd to think as a prison as freedom, but that's exactly what this is."
Brandon laughed once, shrugging a shoulder and brushing past Evan to get the "first look." That fight for power was going to get old fast. "We live in fucking weird times, what do you expect?"
Evan didn't respond to the derision, instead turned to look at Leah when she suggested groupings for searching the prison. He nodded once in response, knowing why she wanted Brandon with them, though he still didn't trust the man not to shoot him in the back when he wasn't paying attention. "It's as close to even as we can get, anyway," he agreed, turning his head to Charlie and Rodeo, "if it works for you two, anyway."
He went quiet again when Rodeo explained who would be where; it was both important information and completely unimportant information, but he listened anyway. Having the man along had been a good idea. Insight into what they could expect. "Piece of cake or not, we've got our radios. Keep in contact. Just in case."
