He shrugged one shoulder. "If you want to call it that, sure. Way I see it is, criminals are easier to find and catch unawares. Nobody misses them when they're gone, and if they are missed, chances are, the people doing the missing wouldn't want to try to explain where the missing person was or what they were doing there." That had always been his reasoning. Going after innocent people was too dangerous for his kind. He did smirk, however, at Rae's assessment of him being a vampire superhero.
Elliot knew she was in a weakened state. Knew she was exhausted and couldn't spare much blood. Maybe he did take a little more than he needed to sate his hunger, but it wouldn't do either of them any good if they were only partially as strong as they usually were. Of the two of them, he trusted his vampire strength more to get them both out of here. As he drank her blood, that was what he promised himself he'd do. Get them both out of here and away from those hunters.
This was why he only took blood from people he could kill afterwards. So he wouldn't have to see the repulsion on their faces. Or the hate. However, he saw none of that in Rae's expression. Elliot's arms were essentially the only thing keeping her from collapsing on the floor, but even that awareness didn't bring about any visual hate or even fear.
He couldn't help but chuckle softly at her response to his gratitude. The smile on his face became a little more self-conscious when he noted the direction of her gaze. He was surprised by her expression, and even more surprised when she leaned in to kiss him. It wasn't unwelcome contact, though. Whatever possessed her, Elliot indulged in it, retracting his fangs so that he didn't cause any damage to her mouth.
"No, I'm taking you with me. We're both getting out of here right now." He set her down long enough to walk over and move the shelf away from the door, then returned to Rae. Scoping the faerie into his arms, he started for the basement's exit, making a mad dash outside before the hunters even realized what was happening.
