Adelaide had set up house in a skinny aisle in the loft that looked down over the public library’s patents room. It was too small an area, really, for much more than a single person, which worked well for Adelaide. She was a big fan of having her own space, no matter how small, after growing up sleeping on a mattress in the common area of that damned trailer. It didn’t matter to her if she couldn’t fully spread her arms crossways between the shelves, and the view over the patents room kept it from being too dim and depressing.
She’d just returned to her nook after getting back from MSG, intending to curl up in her nest of blankets for a nap, when a quick look through the rails down below made her instantly double-take. He looked just the same – maybe a little bigger, a little tougher, if that was possible - but really just the same. Sarge. Even more than seeing Rodeo had done, seeing Sarge made her feel like a fifteen-year-old girl again, when the most complicated thing in her life had been angling to get out of the house for a while and away from Mama.
He’d been the object of her crush in those days, she remembered with a smile. Mostly because he was older and good looking, and got to go out with Rodeo on what seemed to her very glamorous adventures. They'd missed seeing each other since he'd arrived at the library, between her activities and his being processed, but she didn't hesitate to lean over the rail and call his name, waving and unable to help her wide grin. She was actually surprised at the extent of her happiness to see him. "You stay right there, I'm coming down."
