The Gardens trip had been strange.
Strange things had happened.
And Ellie had come to feel very strange, too, though she didn't know why. Something about being out in the field with Lilah and the others -- the sensation of being useful, of completing a task that was necessary and good in the context of others, not only to fulfill her personal interests. Her private research with Brennan (and now with Lilah) had had at its heart the best of intentions; she'd wanted to do something that could be of use eventually, when people began wanting to ask questions again. But there had been a different feeling to the Gardens, crawling in the dirt to gather samples and make cuttings. And it was that feeling that let Eloise know that she was making the right decision, trying to become a medic. Maybe she could feel something like this everyday.
It was so familiar, too. Like a picture she'd seen before, or a half-forgotten childhood field trip.
On the eighteenth, Ellie rose early after a night of reviewing anatomy; though there were dark circles under her eyes and a clear sleepiness to her smile, she was undoubtedly in a good mood. The silence of the library did not feel as oppressive as it had become after visiting Liberty Island. Even Dog seemed happy, greeting the strangers in the medical area with bright eyes and a lolling tongue.
"I'm looking for someone named Rory...?" Eloise voiced, awkward in the tense silence of the ward.
