"We will," Rae promised. "We'll take care of each other." She'd do whatever she could to take care of David the way Elliot had. She wasn't his family, but she'd do whatever she could for him.
Rae watched as Elliot approached the door and reached for the doorknob. David walked across the room to stand beside her, to see his brother off, and she breathed in deep, steadying herself for a little bit longer so that he didn't see her start to cry again. She held her head high, just for a few more seconds, and when he turned his head to look at them, she gave him an encouraging smile, even though tears still lined her eyes and stained her cheeks.
The door closed behind Elliot and disappeared seconds later, and only then did she allow herself to cry again.
He was too good for this world anyway. Now, he was in a place with no pain, no zombies, no sadness... he was with his parents. With her parents. Even though she was sad now, even though she missed him more than she could properly say, and she probably always would, he was in a better place. He was at peace and hopefully in a place that was worthy of him.
She felt David wrap his arms around her and she turned into him, sobbing against his shoulder. He cried too, hugged her and cried, and she took a deep breath, pulling back from the hug and looking up at him. "Let's go for a walk, okay? Maybe we can go to the greenhouses and talk about what what we're going to do from here."
David nodded and lifted his hand to wipe his eyes. "Yeah. Okay..." he said softly.
Yeah. They'd be okay. They weren't okay yet, and it would take some time for them to get there... but they'd be okay. It was what Elliot wanted, and she'd make sure of it, no matter what it took.
