"I always thought you were a hero," the words escaped effortlessly, because it was true. "Always. Whether you were saving me from being dragged down with the people who hate me, or saving lives in the infirmary, you were always a hero to me." She paused. "It was... it was as fitting as death can possibly be, that you went out a hero..." she said, her voice cracking in a desperate attempt to keep back any more tears until he was truly gone. He didn't need to remember her like this... if he could remember wherever he was going to go.
She saw him start to cry and she brought her own hand up, brushing it against his cheek in hopes of being able to smooth some of the wetness away, but she couldn't.
She watched him. Intently. She memorized every single line of his face, because if this was going to be the last time she ever saw him, she wanted to commit it to memory so she could call it up when she was feeling low. His face, his beautiful face, would forever be her happy place. And the memories of the three weeks they spent as a couple, and the year and a half that they spent as best friends, the time she spent falling in love with him; those would be looked upon as some of the fondest memories of her life.
And thus, his next request was met with a choked sob. "Maybe I will move on, and who knows. Maybe I'll love again, but... you can ask me to do almost anything without question but getting over the man who taught me how to love? The man who showed me what I'm worth and made me truly happy in a time when no one else was? That is not one of those things..." she told him. Her tone was stern but her eyes were soft and she brushed her hand along his cheek lovingly. "I'll never forget you. Not in this lifetime or any other. You're my soulmate. That's not something you let go of easily."
Rae's eyes followed Elliot's to the middle of the room, and she blinked when she saw the door. It was time to say goodbye, then. For real.
Swallowing thickly and turning back to look at him, she rocked up onto her tip toes and very softly, almost tentatively, she pressed her lips to his. If this was really, truly it, she wanted to tell him a proper goodbye.
Her lips touched his for a few seconds, and then she opened her eyes, tears glistening in them, and met with his. "I love you, Elliot. I'll miss you."
