THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM. Jesus, apparently I am formatting-retarded this morning.
Charlie never really understood why it was necessary to have an entire SWAT team, armed to the teeth, for New Year's Eve. Yes, there was the possibility of an attack, but there was always the threat of an attack in an area with this many people. Anyone planning an attack knew security would be heightened. Homeland Security, at least two departments of the New York FBI field office, and the NYPD were all scouring the area. The high number of civilians and the expectation of an attack had led to higher security, which had lowered the actual chances of something happening.
It was officially the most boring vicious cycle ever.
"Cover my area between yourselves, kids," she sighed over the radio. The rest of her team was more than capable of taking a few extra blocks in their sights for a few minutes, and she needed something to distract herself. It was only an hour or two until the end of her shift and she felt like she was going stir crazy. A cigarette sounded like it'd help nicely. "I'm taking a smoke break."
Her smoking habit was one of the few things she kept secret from her brother, which meant much of her cigarettes were consumed at work. If Robert noticed the smoke on her clothes, he didn't comment, and that was fine by Charlie. She didn't want him to worry about her health. The kid had enough to deal with, between classes and his new girlfriend (whom Charlie couldn't stand- something made very clear when she'd met the little whiny bitch). Heading out onto the fire escape, she was about to light up and take a drag when she heard a scream for help.
The cigarette and lighter were immediately dropped and forgotten as she took off at a sprint down the fire escape. That scream had been close, and damn if she was going to miss out on a chance to get her adrenaline running on an otherwise boring night. Now I just gotta find 'em, she thought, drawing her sidearm as she headed into the next alley over.
Bingo, Charlie thought, seeing a woman holding a small child fighting against a rather thuggish-looking man. "Freeze! FBI!" She shouted- as if the SWAT vest and helmet didn't make that perfectly clear already.
