Had David been aware that he was being analyzed, his actions and reactions would have been completely different, and it was equal parts because he would try to change how he acted and because he would just make it worse. Analysis always led to him trying to be calm, which always led to stupid mishaps like hitting things that weren't supposed to be hit, saying things that weren't supposed to be said, doing things that weren't supposed to be done or any combination thereof. While he probably would have wanted to know that he was being analyzed? It was best that he didn't.
Not that he was entirely immune to screw ups... he was sure that they'd happen either way. It was just David... just who he was. Even now, within the first few seconds, he'd had to adjust positions twice, bumped the top of the computer screen with his wrist while bringing his hand back from adjusting it and allowed the bottom to slip from his knee when he was adjusting.
So, the suave thing? Not happening. Never happening.
He laughed a little bit, ducking his head in embarrassment at his choice opening line. Of course he shouldn't mind. With the way he was locked up on Liberty Island, it was lucky every time he got the chance to talk to someone... and to have that someone be a pretty girl? Well... that was just an added bonus. So of course, in classic David fashion, he'd gone and screwed it up within the first few seconds. She pouted and David blushed a little bit more. "I didn't mean..." he mumbled, trailing off because it was better just to let it go than make an ass out of himself trying to explain.
"Oh, me either," he responded when she told him that she never got tired of meeting new people. "Liberty Island's kind of closed off, and aside from one mainland trip, I've been here for two years, so it's rare that I meet new people," he explained. "Last ones I really met who I've talked to at any extent are Rae and her friend Sarah." And he didn't even really talk to Sarah much.
David was genuinely surprised when Allie seemed so completely shocked at his uncertainty about attending the party. He bit his lip, cheeks reddening a little bit more. Any number of explanations could get him out of this. His slight crowd anxiety, the fact that he didn't want to charge Rae and Eli with watching over him when they should be having fun... anything. But the expression on her face was... really hard to turn down. When she mentioned hurting her feelings, his eyes shot back to the screen from where they'd been looking down and to the right in embarrassment, and he swallowed thickly. "Well, I... no, I wouldn't want to do that..."
