Kate had been putting the water on to heat for the hot chocolate when Brennan entered. She gave herself a mental pat on the back on for timing that just right. There was already a smile on her face but when she looked up and saw that Brennan was actually smiling her whole face lighted up and her smile grow even wider.
Thank you. Those were the same words that had been on the gift she had found earlier in the day. It was a gift that had touched her as well as the thank you that had came with it.
"Merry Christmas," she told him as she stepped away from the little stove sitting on a desk. "It isn't much but it's something." Kate was proud of what she had managed to put together with what she had to work with. She would have liked to have had a bigger tree, a better meal, and more to offer him but sometimes just a little could go a long way and what she had managed to do was worth for the smile she got.
"Best come in and close the door before we get a line of people out in the hall trying to peer in and see what is going on in here. They been staring at me all day." Not that it had bothered her. Kate wasn't by nature a mean person but she'd admit that a few times she had had the urge to stop and go boo. Let them think her nuts. It wasn't her fault they couldn't see what she saw.
Kate was excited to give Brennan his gift. After meeting him she could admit that she tended to sit around and think about him. It was during these thoughts that it hit her that she had heard that name before. Digging into her bag she had pulled out a coffee table book that she had done some of the photos for. The books was Modern Buildings of New York. Everyone new the historical buildings of New York like the one they were in now but this book featured the newer buildings that had gone up with what at the time had been the past ten years. In it where a couple of Brennan's building, photos that she had taken.
Picking up the gift she offered it to him. "I should probably have you open this after dinner but I can't wait. And if it was a horrible idea please feel free to spare me and pretend you like it."
