"I guess they're especially dangerous," Ellie mused. "For obvious reasons. But also because they unsettle people in a way that other infected don't. I know it can be hard sometimes, to keep your wits about you when you're asked to kill something that is crying and begging for help. Well. Until it starts trying to kill you, anyway."
The worst thing about Wakers for Eloise was how difficult it was to tell their cries from the cries of people in need of real assistance. She hated to think that someone could be left behind to die simply because there was a chance they were already dead.
"I think there must be," she told Brennan. "On the cellular level, maybe. You know. I think I mentioned it to you -- my pheromone theory. I just wish that anything related to pheromones had ever been conclusive..."
"I'll come with you whenever you'd like to go," Eloise added. "It's up to you."
It would just be difficult to really be thorough about their observations, no matter what time they made it out. The city wasn't exactly a patient or forgiving environment. It likely had never been, honestly.
