Distractions were still the name of the game in Regan’s world. Sometimes he found they worked, and sometimes he found that all that did was remind him of her. Everyone kept telling him that this pain would fade, or that it would get easier – he wasn’t seeing how that could be possible. Right now he felt like a giant hole had appeared in his chest, and he had no way to escape the pain. He was working towards trying to get over this though, talking with Toby on a weekly basis was helping, but when he didn’t have that as an option, well; it was back to his fail safe – distractions.
One of those distractions was the reason he found himself heading into the storeroom. The goddamn spraypainters were still up to their tricks, and with each new message he became more and more determined to get to the bottom of this. The message today had read ’The party would have been bigger if he had died’ The ‘he’ in the sentence could be taken to mean either Evan or Zach, and he figured that was intentional.
Whoever it was meant for wasn’t the concern. Regan wanted to get the damn message off the outer wall of one of the unused buildings as soon as possible – and with Brandon pulling ‘Silas duty’ today, that meant he had all the free time in the world to scrub at and paint over the message.
Shoving open the door to the storeroom, he stepped just inside the room and paused. Finding another person inside was a bit of a surprise, but finding Toby inside was even more of a surprise. “Hey,” he greeted the other man with a half-smile. “Safe to assume you’re here because of our friendly neighborhood spraypainter?” Regan hoped that the other man wasn’t still trying to get rid of the message left for his sister and daughter, but he also figured it wasn’t outside of the realm of possibility either.
