In some ways this little performance reminded her of things people used to pull back at parties in Harlan. Someone was always trying to do something crazy and possibly dangerous, so in a weird way this made Sing Sing feel a bit more like home – which was nice, since Nick was finding more and more often that she missed Kentucky. Or maybe she just missed the culture there, since nowhere else was quite like Eastern Kentucky in her mind.
Nick simply grinned as the horde of middle schoolers and some grade schoolers followed after Jace as he ushered them towards a big empty spot on the edges of the courtyard. She followed along behind them all, making a mental not to watch Jeremy who seemed enamored with the idea of this trick, which probably meant the boy was going to try it himself at some point.
As all eyes were on Jace while he began his little performance, Nick lifted one of the smaller girl’s up into her arms, the six year old a better view of what the red-haired bartender was about to do. When the flames shot up into the air the little girl squealed and buried her face in Nick’s shoulder. She laughed softly at the little girl, though she could admit that her first reaction might have been to yelp in surprise – followed by being really freaking impressed. It wasn’t every day that you got to see a person breath fire after all.
“Wellll,” she drug out the word, trying to hide just how impressed she was. “I suppose that was pretty cool.” She answered, giving him a look when he dared her to do something cooler. “Oh trust me, I could, but as I said before, Silas isn’t letting me near the things that go boom.” Granted maybe not everyone found explosions to be as cool as she did. “And how exactly did you learn to do that anyway?”
