“He got a reason for that?” Jace asked, making conversation, and he kind of got the feeling that Nick was a little annoyed about Silas’ decision. He didn’t blame her, he’d be a little annoyed too if he wasn’t allowed to do something he was capable of. It was a perk to not be considered one of the teenagers, even if those were the people he usually got along with the best. “Or is he just being a jackass?” Jace had nothing against the guy, he’d always been pretty decent to have around in The Horsemen; usually kept to himself though, unless Brandon Stone and Regan Jones were with him.
Getting something for someone. That was a pretty evasive sentence, but it was Nick’s right to keep details to herself. “So, did you? Get the thing you were looking for, I mean. ‘Cause it wouldn’t make the trip worth it if you didn’t get and and you got a broken bone for your trouble.” He rarely went out for things for himself, so it beyond him to go scavenging for others. That’s what the looters were for; they were always more than willing to find shit for people. “Coulda been worse, I guess, coulda been a leg or an ankle. Then you’d be on crutches and that would suck.”
He shook his head. “Nah, I think we’ll be good. I’ll just drop and roll if I’m set on fire,” he replied with a grin. “Besides, if it comes back at me I’m probably screwed anyways.” He dug around in the knapsack that he’d brought with him, because yeah, he was that guy that carried shit around with him. Had to have somewhere to stash things like cards or corn starch or anything else. “Gonna take some set up though, and I probably won’t do it right here, too dangerous for everyone else.” Probably just off the courtyard would be better, less chance of someone not paying attention and walking by and getting crispified. He didn’t want to have that conversation with the medics, no thank you.
“I’d never blame you either, for the record,” he added, even though she’d been joking. Anything that went wrong was firmly on him.
Getting all the things required took a couple more minutes, and when he was finally ready he looked at Nick and the entourage that were still kind of huddled near him and raised his eyebrows. “Well, you ready to be amazed?”
