Well, at least Maddie didn’t seem like she begrudged the company. April was still trying to figure DJ’s sister out to some degree. She came off as if she didn’t care about other people’s opinions of her – actually in a lot of ways she reminded April of Luke. But that fact only made her more certain that there was something deeper going on with Maddie, that she had layers that she preferred to hide from people in favor of outrageous behavior that got her attention. She saw glimpses of a different side of Maddie when she’d been helping Luke out, but those had only been glimpses and April was nothing if not a curious kind of person – which meant she wanted to know if there was more than just glimpses to see.
“Right, it is around lunch time, isn’t it?” April had lost track of time, a habit she wasn’t proud of, but one that did happen more often than she cared to admit. This whole small talk thing kind of sucked, or she sucked at it. Yeah, it was probably the later.
It was kind of curious that Maddie was hanging out in the rec room by herself. Most times when April saw her she had at least one other person with her, normally it was her friend Caitie – the little redhead. “So is there a reason you’re hanging out here alone?” April blurted out, wondering if she could blame that on the pain meds and not her general lack of a filter.
Great, at this rate you’ll never find common ground with her. April wasn’t entirely oblivious, she was aware that her own quirks had a tendency to turn people off of being around her. But she was determined to try and get to know Maddie, if not for her sake, than for DJ’s. Plus Luke seemed to like Maddie a lot, which only made her think she would like the other girl also if she got to know her.
Why wasn’t she with Luke? That was a question she heard a lot. “He’s still not feeling well, so I left him at the apartment,” April explained simply, a friendly smile turning up the corners of her mouth. “Plus, I was searching for DJ and those two just barely get along on a good day.” And yes, she was well aware that it was almost entirely on Luke fault for that.
