“Hey, you aren’t going to get any argument about that from me,” Regan responded with a smile. Part of him was trying to ignore that little voice that told him Sol would have been an awesome mom, or reminded him that he’d likely never be a father now. Starting a family had been a topic of conversation between him and Soli, and if losing her wasn’t hard enough – losing the idea of having a family added to that pain. “Guess I wasn’t aware that the abilities are supposed to make us feel original,” But he could be wrong there. “Although it is nice to know you’re the only person with a certain ability.” He glossed over talk of people avoiding death, it just brought up too many ‘what if’s’.
Regan chuckled. “Who knew that taking care of a couple injured people could send you straight back to feeling like you’re in high school,” As they stepped into the cool air, Regan realized if he had been thinking he would have offered Rae his jacket, but hindsight was a funny thing like that. “All the dirt on Silas?” He quirked an eyebrow up and tried not to laugh. “You’re forgetting that you’re talking to Fort Knox here, so you’d have better luck getting that information out of Stone than you would me.” It wasn’t that he didn’t want to share information with Rae; it was just that it wasn’t really in his nature to dish dirt so to speak. “Although feel free to ask me questions, some of them I might be able to answer.”
“You’re allowed your feminist moments,” He began with a bit of a smirk. “I’ve got two sisters, so I understand.” Regan had also spent the better part of a decade with a very opinionated woman who had insisted on doing a lot of things on her own, so he really did understand. His brow furrowed slightly at the way Rae took a deep breath, if he didn’t know better he’d say she was struggling with exhaustion – but since it was obvious she was trying to hide it, he chose not to say anything about it.
It was nice to find a like-minded person, though Regan didn’t fault people who just weren’t the type to offer help. “No, I’ve kind of picked up on the ‘every man for himself’ mentality that some people have around this place,” He paused for a moment before adding. “Maybe it’s about time you were the one receiving help, then,” he remarked with an easy smile. “And you did ask me, so I’d say maybe you’re growing in that area.”
Laughing, he couldn’t deny that Rae was probably right about that, still, he wasn’t going to push his luck. “You’re probably not wrong about that, but still for my own safety I’m going to keep my opinions to myself,” Regan’s eyebrows rose at the nickname Rae used. “Topher? So apparently he’s let you in on the deep dark secret of his first name, huh?” To his knowledge there was really only a handful of people – if that – that knew Silas’ first name. “And you know we went over the whole dirt thing, but maybe I can come up with something.” It wasn’t really betraying Silas if he offered Rae something small as dirt, right?
“Oh really?” Regan asked, an amused smile turning up the corners of his mouth. “I’m sure your brownies are awesome, but I have to admit nothing will top Sol’s brownies in my opinion,” And yeah he was ignoring that pang right then at the idea he’d never have those again either. “But I’m sure yours are good as well.” He added, hoping he hadn’t offended Rae with his remark.
Everything happened rather quickly, but in one moment Rae was walking along beside him and in the next she was on the ground with a bloodied arm and dazed look on her face. Regan had his suspicions of what had just happened, and unlike earlier when she had been trying to hide her exhaustion – he wasn’t going to let this slide by. Kneeling down beside her, he shook his head slightly. “That’d be a good excuse if there were ice around here,” he pointed out lightly, noting that the sidewalk was clear as could be. “So how ‘bout you tell me what really just happened.” Regan wasn’t pushy about it, but his words made it clear he wasn’t going to let her just play this off.
He winced slightly when she hissed in pain, though he had to assume that it was just a side effect of her healing ability. “That cut might be healing, but you’re not alright.”
