In the back of his mind Regan wondered if there would ever come a time in which this place wasn’t under fire in some way or another. Though he hadn’t been present for some of the terrible things that had befallen the compound, he had heard about them second hand. Heard enough to get this feeling that the place was cursed, or maybe this was just the new normal? The latter thought was an unsettling one to him, one he tried to generally ignore. Granted he didn’t think about it often, not when his thoughts were still consumed by the ‘what ifs’ and the ‘should haves’ of what happened to his wife. There was a part of him, a small part, but still a part, that envied people like Rae or Leah, envied the fact that their loved ones had come so close to dying and yet they had been spared.
They’ve lost people. He reminded himself. Both women had lost people and moved on. He often wondered if there would come a time when he would move on, or be able to move on.
It seemed like a far-fetched idea to him still, the thought of being with another woman, of filling that role in his life that had so solidly belonged to Soli for so long. Shaking his head, Regan ran a hand over his face and sighed. Now wasn’t the time to be thinking about this shit. He had things to do and stuff that needed to be focused on.
First though he was going to drop in on Silas, see how his friend was doing.
That thought was of course derailed when he stepped into the infirmary just in time to have stack of small random items tumble around his feet. “Need some help there?” He asked as he looked up from the floor and caught sight of Rae. “Or did you mean to scatter everything like this?” His tone was easy going as he asked the question.
Without waiting for a response Regan knelt down and began gathering the scattered items. Helping Rae gave him an excuse to get out of his mind for awhile, which was kind of exactly what he needed.
