This whole thing wrought of a year ago. A painful pang of memory arose, and Rae couldn't help but remember the time after the cult attacked, when Elliot lay helpless in the infirmary for days. Rae's time was divided this time; April was three or four rooms away in the same condition, and it was hard to take care of EJ when all of his things were back at the apartment. People tried to get her to go home, but she couldn't. Not until they were both awake. Sleep was rare over the past few days. Rare and taken sitting up in one of the chairs in either Topher or April's rooms. She was running mostly on coffee right now, and from time to time, even that seemed to fail her. She was exhausted. But she couldn't go home. Not, at least, until both of them woke up. Her eyes wandered over to EJ, sleeping peacefully in his carrier, without a care in the world. "I wish I could do that," she murmured to him, uncrossing her legs and standing up. She made her way over to the carrier and pulled EJ's blanket up and over his little shoulders. "Think you could teach mommy to sleep like that?" she asked him. He opened his mouth and made a little sleep-noise, and Rae couldn't help but chuckle. "You're so perfect," she told him. "Best thing in my life," she added. She smiled a little when he opened his eyes. Even before he had cognitive skill, he already knew exactly what mommy needed. Rae moved EJ's carrier over to the table beside Topher's bed, and sat in the chair, turning her head to look at her son. "So, what do you think?" she asked him. "Think he's going to wake up soon? And Aunt April, too?" she added. "Mommy misses them both quite a bit. Just kind of wants to know they're okay." She watched as he moved his hand out from under his blanket and reached out. She laughed a little and held her index finger out, her sad smile growing a little when he grabbed it. "They have to be okay, Little One. They have to," she said, her smile fading a little bit. "Mommy can't lose anyone else. She can't." Maybe, given the world's circumstances nowadays, it was unfair of her to hope not to lose anyone else, but she felt like she'd lost enough. Like life had already tossed her enough hurt, and she was due for some happy. She turned her attention to Topher's bed, thought EJ still held tightly to her finger. "You have to wake up. You have to. Please..." she begged him, and let off a combination between a sob and a laugh when EJ made a noise. "See? Even he agrees," she told Topher desperately. |
