“Mmhm,” She answered by way of confirmation that yes, Evan had been stabbed. April was oblivious to what that news might do to Brandon, forgetting in that moment that her rescuer’s sister was involved with Evan. Maybe it was lucky she didn’t remember that fact, or she would have felt awful about breaking the news in such a straightforward manner.
With a shake of her head, April brushed off his apology. “Not your fault,” he wasn’t the person who had hurt her after all, and the little bit of jostling couldn’t be helped, or at least that’s what she figured. “I can handle the pain.” She added, trying to force herself to keep from making anymore noise, biting the inside of her lip whenever pain shot through her body.
Should they have been out here? Probably not.
“You’re probably right,” was her answered, spoken quietly. “Especially since someone did get hurt.” Or more than one someone, but she didn’t add that. Evan as the leader made more sense to have been on this raid, but she also didn’t point out that their options had been limited, so sometimes you had to take the people who shouldn’t have been there. “Sorry, I’ll remember that next time.” She answered with a tiny smile, not bothered by the inappropriateness of his joke. Things like that just didn’t bother her the same way it did other people.
Almost there. Those words were comforting.
“M’kay,” she mumbled, focusing more and more of her energy on staying awake. “Hopefully they will.” Because she wasn’t sure how much longer she could fight to stay awake.
