Benevolent wasn't a word in her vocabulary – mainly because she didn't know what it meant – so the only response she gave was a curt nod and a shrug, sarcastic agreement if nothing else. A dare. Maddie's brows quirked in mild interest at that. “Huh. Guess you know at least one thing about me.” It both was and wasn't a compliment. “Don't know why I didn't think of that myself.” And just like that, the wheels began turning in her mind, twisting and rotating to form some kind of a task that Nick could do to try to impress her.
Another eye-roll. Yeah, she had part of her family here, but of the three, Maddie only seemed to feel the least lonely when she was around Zach. Charlie ignored them all too often, and DJ, well, she had the utmost sibling love for him, but they were two completely different people with vastly different interests and demeanors. She didn't understand what her family had to do with Nick being all superhelper. Which was probably more or less why Nick used that as one of her points.
“If you say so, Runt. Still think you only do it so that people will like you. That's the only reason why anybody does anything good around here. To be liked.”
She perked up when an idea for a dare finally sparked in her mind. No matter that Nick could've easily dared her to do something and used it as blackmail for catching her with a three year old. For that, she was glad the other girl wasn't as underhanded as she was. “So you've shown that you can be a thief. Are you brave enough to go into town by yourself, too? I've done it loads of times,” she bragged. In truth, it had only been a handful of times. It had also been months since she'd done it; facing down a Smasher had pretty much eliminated any desire Maddie had for venturing into town on her own.
“Find me a lava lamp. Intact and fully functional.” It wasn't a common item, but she'd seen a few when she was out and about with Caitie. All of the ones she'd seen had been broken, though. “It'll earn you another nod of respect from me.” Her smirk became devious. “Although I can understand wanting to back out. After all, why would you want me to like you?”
