Part of her was incredibly thrilled that Jax had taken her suggestion to paint the walls seriously. Nick hadn’t entirely expected that, but it was nice. “You should,” she said with a bright smile. “And of course it would be cool, I suggested it.” Two could play the whole ‘healthy confidence’ thing up.
Dating would of course be different now, but Nick had to figure the core of things would be the same. Plus, the up side was she wouldn’t know if having Jax as a boyfriend was any different than having a boyfriend before the outbreak happened. For some reason that was actually comforting, even if she wondered if Jax had dated, though it probably didn’t matter if he had. After all he was with her, so that meant something, right? Was he blushing? Nick tilted her to the side and just studied him for a long moment. “Are you blushing?” She blurted out. “And know you’re just sounding cocky with the whole super power, which I’ve yet to see.” Teasing, that’s all it was. She had seen enough abilities by now to know that they were real, and why would Jax lie about walking through walls?
The scowl caused her to laugh, which she knew wasn’t the desired effect, but it was just too hard to keep a straight face in that moment. “Your scowl would be scarier without the smile,” she pointed out with a smirk. Considering his words for a moment, she made a humming noise as she thought about it. “And maybe they will, we’ll just have to see about that.”
With a shake of her head, she laughed. “Okay, I guess I won’t argue that,” Nick answered. It was probably only fair that he get to open his gift, even if it was her birthday she probably shouldn’t go hogging the entire spotlight, right? She found herself flushing when it was obvious he liked the gift, it was nice to know she had picked something out that he truly liked. “Yeah?” Despite his words of affirmation that he liked it, she still found herself questioning his response. Then he was leaning and kissing her cheek, and that was kind of all the reassurance Nick needed. With grabby hands she took the smaller box he handed her, opening it quickly and staring at it for a long moment. The ring was gorgeous and she was speechless for a moment. “Jax….” She trailed off. “It’s gorgeous!” Nick finally managed to exclaim as she lifted the ring out of the box and slipped it onto her finger. “And it fits.”
