She still made no move to approach. No sudden movements and no loud noises, just like dealing with a wild animal. Sadly ironic, considering he'd been a vet. Was a vet.... Is a vet... Thinking about him in the past tense was counterproductive to keeping herself in the mindset that he really was alive, that the darkness wasn't playing tricks on her eyes and making her think she was seeing David when it was really somebody else.
Wherever exactly 'over there' meant wasn't the most important thing right now. She took vague note of the direction he pointed, but her main focus was on him. On making sure he didn't completely lose whatever sanity he had left out here on the street. “Neither of us is gonna die tonight.” She hesitated, debating whether to say that she was armed. Probably not a good idea.
If the gang showed up, the pair was close enough to the compound that firing off a few shots from her pistol would draw the attention of whomever was on guard duty tonight. At the very least, she could cause enough of a stir, enough of a distraction, to allow time for backup to arrive. Hopefully. If it had been only her, she would've been okay with taking the risk, if it meant the gang was stopped. But with David there, she wasn't quite a fan of the impromptu plan.
He wasn't fine. Jackie expected the lie and didn't call him on it. Just nodded and made a mental note to make sure a medic checked him out once she got him back to the compound. “Yeah. From Sing Sing. I know people who've been looking for you, who want to know that you're alive.” She didn't say that they'd all given him up for dead, though.
Taking a breath, Jackie ventured a cautious step towards him. Just one. Just to gauge his reaction. “I can take you home. You're safe with me.”
