“Wouldn't be the first time I spoke before thinking. Probably won't be the last either,” she responded with an easy shrug. “Long as you don't hold it against me. Or, hell, even do me a favor and pretend I did say something more clever.” It didn't bother her that he'd probably looked through her medical history. Apart from a few accidents (courtesy of stupidity), there wasn't anything worth mentioning, really.
She reached up to simultaneously massage the back of her neck and stretch her arm. “It took me and a few others several weeks to find enough decent shit to bring back here. I'd hate to see it get taken for one person's selfish needs. They can find their own damn exercise equipment.” Generosity was a common trait with her, but she drew the line at being taken advantage of. “The weights are the easiest things to steal – I guess you could call it stealing, anyway – so we're always short on those. No one else has really volunteered, so I guess I pretty much am in charge here.” She was okay with that. She was also okay if someone else wanted to come in and take charge of things.
Without missing a beat, Jackie answered, “Later. You won't be getting out of this part of it that easy.” She gestured vaguely at the gym. Her words weren't specifically meant to discourage him, either. In truth, she wouldn't mind a hookup, if they had friendly enough chemistry (which, if this conversation was any indication, they did) and could keep it as a no-strings-attached type deal. It just wasn't something she was seriously actively seeking. The flirting was fun, though.
“I'm all about doing what I want. Though you probably could already guess that much.” She held his gaze for a moment, then snorted a laugh. “Man, it's a little ironic that you can throw around compliments like it's nothing but your bedside manner is seriously lacking.” She grinned. “Kinda funny, too.”
Jackie counted out a few skips on the rope before bothering to answer. “Probably be a long-ass time before those zombies go away.” But they wouldn't stop fighting, surviving. At least Jackie wouldn't. “At least you make do with what you can get. Some people aren't even satisfied with that.”
Her stopwatch beeped, signaling the end of the warmup, and Jackie stopped jumping rope. “Let's get you on that weight bench now. How much do you lift on average? We'll start there, work our way up.”
