Charlie shrugged. "Seems like you've handled yourselves." They'd done well, from what she'd seen. Definitely in the realm of "prospering". There were more people than she remembered, and everyone seemed well-fed and relatively happy in the grand scheme of things.
Happy. Yeah, she'd thought she was that once too, and look where it had gotten her. In this world, there was no such thing.
She opened her mouth to say something, but was interrupted by one of the medics coming out into the hallway. The grim look on his face told Charlie all she needed to know before he even opened his mouth to say "I'm sorry". Whatever apology and information the man uttered was lost on her after that point, because all she could hear was the blood rushing in her ears, and for a moment, she thought she was going to vomit.
There were no tears, though. Anyone looking at her face would probably think she didn't care at all, as the only reaction she had was a slight paling of her skin.
She knew Evan knew better.
"Can I see her?" It was her fuck-up. Her mistake to fix. Her responsibility to put a bullet in her daughter's brain.
