The expression on her face stunned him speechless. He wasn't used to seeing emotion like that coming from her, but at the same time, maybe it shouldn't have surprised him. Especially given what she'd been through. He swallowed thickly and squeezed her shoulder supportively, telling her wordlessly that he was still there, that no matter what had happened, it was okay and she could stay here for as long as she wanted to. Once a family, always a family, he thought.
As she told him the story, his expression fell. Another of those instances where there wasn't anything she could have done differently, aside from maybe staying in the compound to begin with. It seemed like those chose one person and clung to them like awful glue.
Instinct told Evan to tell her that there was nothing she could have done. But in her shoes, especially so soon after the incident, Evan wouldn't have wanted to hear that. As it stood, he had a hunch that it would likely do more harm than good.
So, instead of that, he said, "the medics will do the best they can." If there was anything to be done, anyway. They were brilliant, but if she was infected, if she wasn't immune... there wasn't much they could do. "It's good that you came back here," he added. "We'd missed you." It might not have been what she wanted to hear, but it was true.
