It didn’t circumstances maybe Bea would have taken at least part of that statement as a compliment, but he was calling her out on something, and she wasn’t amused. “Oh really?” she shot back, pursing her lips. “So you just lack subtlety then?” She couldn’t even place why she was picking a fight with him now, it was stupid. She was being stupid. No wonder she’d picked up the reputation she had. Maybe it had been the overt way he was flirting, like she was just supposed to go with it, like he couldn’t have a normal conversation without somehow lacing every statement with flirty undercurrent. Or maybe she really was being that much of a bitch.
“You know what, forget I said anything.” It wouldn’t smooth anything over now, but maybe he’d let whatever just happened drop.
She could just about hear what Vienna would say if she caught wind of what had transpired. She’d start in with that matchmaking shit again, probably. Just what Bea needed, her sister starting in on that again. It wasn’t that she didn’t want something, but it was something that wasn’t a priority. There were people in the compound that were more than happy to help her scratch an itch if she needed to, she didn’t need some complicated emotional shit attached to it.
“The Indian doctor, right? She doesn’t strike me as the complain-y type.” Suresh, if she remembered the name right. “It’s a little surprising they don’t have some weird food things, given the fact that at least half of this place is picky as fuck.” Or complaining about things that they just couldn’t produce. Like cheese, that was still a commodity they didn’t have. Or beef. They still hadn’t run into any cows safe enough to bring back and butcher, as far as she knew.
At least if they were talking about food she had a slim chance of fucking up the conversation again. Not that it probably mattered on a personal level, since she’d definitely thrown some pretty wicked barbs at him earlier, but she should probably try to keep some diplomacy intact. Even if Evan was worlds better at it than she would ever be.
“I think there’s a canvas bag in that back cupboard too,” she pointed, then glanced at the kitchen staff for confirmation and received a nod in return. “We can bring it back as long as we return it.”
