It was a valid point, but Evan shrugged. “It's really a no win situation,” he mused. “I'm dreading the moment one of the kids around here gets curious and tries to leave. And when they get older, they'll be tragically underprepared. I'd been considering starting self-defense classes for kids, but that's also got the potential to turn into disaster, because so many children in a confined space and constantly exposed to each other? Is a dangerous thing.” A very dangerous thing when they had children like that kid Ethan running around, always trying to pick fights with other kids already, even without the aid of self-defense classes. So, it probably wasn't such a good idea.
Evan snorted a laugh. “Or STD's,” he mused. Though there probably were those... it was way less pleasant to think about than a baby boom. “We're already in something of a baby boom, aren't we?” An entertaining thought, but a true one. Between EJ and his child, and the couple of others that had been born recently, they were in something of a baby boom. “I suppose it is up to us to repopulate.” A fun thought, and his grin mirrored that fact.
“See, exactly. Me getting involved with the actual science things would be bad. Since you can't do the whole explosions thing.” Honestly, they were talking like they were joking, but the last thing Evan wanted was to get blown up. “I'm not sure,” he said honestly. “I'd like to be on the up and up with what you're all doing, but... I'm supposed to be taking it easy, too.” Not by his own choice, of course. But that was another point entirely.
The honesty (or, what he hoped was honesty) was welcome; most of the people around here would've come up with a lie when Evan asked a question like that. He shrugged and smiled.
“Marigold's with Leah's sister right now, so I've got a couple of hours,” he explained. “I can help you head over there.” He paused and nodded when she mentioned the field trip, then shrugged. “I can see if Kori, Lilah or Brandon will watch Mari for a few hours and I can come out with you, if you need the help. If you want me there, that is.” He wasn't trying to assume himself, but he wanted to help.
