A quiet laugh escaped her at Jax’s mumbled words. Nick thought that was the sort of thing a child may use to protest going to bed, but he definitely wasn’t a child, still, she couldn’t help but laugh at the weak argument that he was awake. “Just barely,” she answered, nudging her elbow into his ribs gently. In all honestly she wouldn’t mind if he fell asleep on her, company was company, even if was sleeping company. “That’s what I thought,” she chirped, fighting down the urge to shift and look up at him. The tired tone in his voice made her want to be merciful to him, instead of poking fun or picking at him to get some kind of reaction.
Any kind of amused smile Nick may have had turned into a frown at his admission that he hadn’t been sleeping great lately. “Oh…” She didn’t pry, it wasn’t a character trait she possessed, yet she found herself wanting to know why Jax wasn’t sleep well. “Is…is there a reason behind that?” The question was asked quietly. If he chose to over look it, pretend like he hadn’t heard it, well, Nick wouldn’t push the issue further.
After all, who did sleep well nowadays? It made her feel kind of guilty that she had said anything at all, maybe she should have just let it go when she had noticed Jax’s posture shift and felt the weight leaning against her. Hindsight, she supposed. Next time, that was if she ever found herself in a situation like this again, she would keep her mouth shut and let the poor person sleep.
