She was fidgeting and she knew she was fidgeting. But April couldn’t stop from shifting around on her end of the couch, first sitting cross-legged and then shifting to sit with her legs up underneath herself. They guy kind of seemed to be actively ignoring her presence or at least trying not to look at her, which made starting up a conversation that much more awkward. Reaching up she twisted a curl around her finger, trying to keep her fidgeting to a minimum.
Just as she was about to shift over to get a better look at what he was doing, the guy looked over at her and smiled. Or at least she thought it was meant to be a smile. Her expression reflected her confusion of the guy’s grimace smile. Maybe he really doesn’t want company. she thought, wondering if she should rethink this whole ‘making friends’ thing.
You should really either say something or leave. April chided herself, fighting back the urge to start shifting around again. Pulling a book out of her bag would be rude, but it was what she wanted to do at that very moment. He’s focused on his game. She reasoned with herself as she leaned forward to dig around in the bag she had dropped near her feet.
Once she had the book in hand, she set it in her lap and began to read. Though every few minutes she would glance up and look over at the guy. If he was so uncomfortable why didn’t he just leave? It’s what April would have done, but then again she wasn’t a great example of proper etiquette or anything.
She caught movement out of the corner of her eye and thought he was leaving, but as she brought her eyes up again to look at him she realized he was just taking a drink from a water bottle. Speak! That stupid voice in the back of her mind was at it again, but all she managed was to open and close her mouth like a fish, completely at a loss as to what to say. That's not speaking. The voice was getting sarcastic now and April scrunched up her face in annoyance at that fact, forgetting that while she was doing all of this she was still looking at the guy.
