When you were actively trying not to look at someone, it was difficult not to make it obvious. He could see, in his peripheral vision, that she was moving around; shifting and trying to make herself comfortable or something, maybe. He worried his lip on the side of his mouth that she couldn't see, momentarily toying with the idea of saying something to her. Even something as simple as a hello would do.
Then, she giggled. Whatever part of his mind was coming up with something to say completely faltered, and he ended up clearing his throat instead.
He did, however, look in her direction with what he hoped was a smile, but was probably something like a grimace. Definitely not what he was going for. This is what happens when you try and be smooth. You just look like a jackass, he thought, wordlessly reprimanding himself as he stared ahead at the TV screen. Final Fantasy always served as a decent distraction when he made himself look like an idiot, but not today.
A small part of him wondered if he should just leave. Just let her be by herself. At the same time, though, he was getting some decent signals that she actually wanted company. If his people skills didn't suck so much, maybe he could even trust himself.
Reaching forward to the table, for something to do so that he wasn't just sitting there like a complete moron, he picked up his bottle of water and took a drink. Conversation starting had always been Maddie's forte. When it came to outgoingness, she was definitely the Johnson that had the most of that. Dillon usually just ended up riding her coattails.
