The smile widened, turned into something more mischievous. Maddie had always been something of a mischievous child, but it was the apocalypse that really amped it up. After all, there were only so many ways one could entertain oneself these days. Maddie’s method just happened to be giving people a rough time. “Well now, I didn’t say that, did I?” Not technically, anyway. “I can’t go showing all my cards to anyone who asks. That’d completely ruin things for me.”
A few people already thought she was the one who spread all those vicious rumors on the intranet. Granted, it was her style, but that didn’t mean everyone had the right to assume it was her without proof. Maddie was just as curious as anyone to find out who the mystery person was. Something like this, a fight in a cellblock, was prime rumor meat. For all they knew, the gossiper was among them right now.
“Maybe I should start doing that,” Maddie said with a snort. “Taking bets on all the fights around here.” She doubted anyone would trust her with whatever they were gambling with, though. Perks of being one of the least trustworthy people in the compound. “But that might involve actual work, and I’m allergic.” Not entirely, but hey, she had a reputation to uphold.
Maddie grinned. She really hadn’t been serious about her stink bomb suggestion, but Miah’s reaction was worth it. “I could settle for a flash bomb. Only thing is, I have no idea how to get my hands on one.”
The fight seemed to be escalating. Or evolving. The guy was starting to fight back, with words, with protests that his girlfriend was an ice queen and the woman he was cheating on her with was so much better. Maddie made a face and shook her head. The guy was an idiot. But at least it was a good show. “Dude is just looking to get murdered in his sleep, I think.”
