“Which is a surprise to nobody,” Nick said with a hint of teasing in her voice. She shrugged slightly at the comment about blue, maybe she was just strange but she had always liked the color blue better than any other color. “I don’t know, I don’t think it’s always sad.” But maybe she was just biased because it was pretty much her favorite color. “Also they’re Christmas colors, which is just depressing right now.”
Shrugging her shoulders, she knew her friend had a point. “Yeah, I know I’m not, and I know there are. But they aren’t my brothers, if that makes sense…” Nick adored the people at Sing Sing she considered very nearly family, but there was something about not having any of her brothers around for the holiday that depressed her a little. “But you’re not alone either, you’ve got people who care about you as well, I mean you’ve got Maddie and her siblings, and you’ve got me.”
“Clearly you’re just terrifying and he didn’t want to face you wrath,” This was her poor attempt at lightening the mood. Nick couldn’t even really start to pinpoint why it was Caitie’s older brother went and ran off on her. It was stupid, really.
Nick shook her head and tried to smile reassuringly as she spoke. “Not really, at least you’re not bringing me down. So no apology necessary.” Maybe other people would be bothered by Caitie’s mood, but Nick had been prepared for it.
