If she squinted her eyes and blocked out the background noise and focused solely on the music playing and Rae practicing in the center of the room, April could almost fool herself into thinking they were back home in Attica, at Aunt Mary and Uncle Andreas place. She couldn’t even keep track of how many times growing up she had kept her cousin company like this, watching her practice and clapping silently whenever she would finish a routine. April was getting lost in a fairy tale land, or maybe a memory and then EJ made a happy baby noise and her attention was drawn down to him, and the little bubble was burst, bringing her back to where they really were and what was really happening. Everything’s different Maybe not everything, but a lot of things were different. They were all older, Aunt Mary and Uncle Andreas were gone, Aunt Anna and James weren’t here, Rae was a mother, and they were living in a prison. Those were things that were different, but the core things, the stuff that made them who they were, that stuff hadn’t changed. Like Rae’s love of dancing, even with the world crumbling around them her cousin had managed to maintain her love of dance. It was comforting how despite all the gloom there were still things that felt like home, if she squinted her eyes just right and maybe tilted her head to the left just a little. As Rae twirled around the room, performing a routine that only she seemed to know. April spoke quietly to EJ. “Your mama’s kind of awesome,” she murmured these words as she held the little boy so that he could see his mom. “But not just because of the way she can dance.” April added with a small smirk. She knew EJ didn’t understand what she was saying, not yet anyway. But still more often than not she found herself carrying on conversations with him, despite that fact. “EJ says you’re awesome,” April spoke louder this time, directing her words at Rae. “Also he says you’re making both him and I dizzy.” The playful twinkle in April’s blue eyes and the smile gracing her features made it obvious that last part was entirely a joke. |
