CHALLENGE: Shakin' In Mah Boots
Christmas looting sounded a lot like ‘shopping’ to him, something Zach had never been a fan of. But he was even less of a fan of disappointing his baby sister, so despite his own feelings about looting in general, he had agreed to her very subtle demand to go Christmas looting. He had already done a lifetime of disappointing her in the previous months; so some could say Zach was attempting to make it up to Maddie by bending to her requests whenever they may come his way. A part of him would have loved to say that this soft spot or inability to say ‘no’ was a new thing, but even he wasn’t idiotic enough to try and delude himself, from the moment their parents had brought her home he had always lacked the ability to say ‘no’ to Maddie. Which was exactly why he found himself driving through and abandoned town, searching for just the right spot start this Christmas looting adventure. He wondered sometimes if people were doing the same in Memphis, driving through abandoned neighborhoods, looting the stuff he and his family had left behind in their rush to reach safety. Zach grimaced at the idea of people claiming some of their things, actually he didn’t care about his stuff – but the idea of people using items that had belonged to Sasha or Gordy turned his stomach. They don’t need it anymore. He reminded himself as he set down a photo album of the family who had lived in this house prior. That thought still upset him most days, his younger brother and sister would never need their stuff again. And by being out here the same thing could happen to me. He didn’t fear the infected. After all they could be killed, but people slipped up, made mistakes and that’s when his fear came into play. Zach worried about what would happen to everyone else in his life if he were bit and not immune. Images of what had happened to Gordy flashed through his mind. The look on his brother’s face when he realized what was happening – that pleading look would be burned into Zach’s mind permanently. But it won’t! Nothing will happen. It was almost like a mantra Zach had had running through his mind all day, reassuring himself that his baby sister wouldn’t be faced with the same dilemma he had been faced with. The one he hadn’t been brave enough to deal with. Shaking the memory from his mind, he took a deep breath and glanced over at the passenger seat, switching his focus to the present and pushing the past aside. “So where to first, Munchkin?” Zach asked as he put the borrowed truck into park outside of one of the many abandoned homes. |
