Decorating the Christmas tree in the center of the courtyard had been a group effort. It seemed like everyone in the compound (the ones who celebrated Christmas, at least) had contributed an ornament of some kind. It was a mishmash of themes and quality of decorations, and it made Maddie feel homesick. It had been years since the Johnsons had been able to go all out for Christmas. They’d had to make new traditions, improvise things, and it just wasn’t the same as it had been when she was younger. This year would also mark the first in a long time that she wasn’t celebrating with her parents. She was grateful that she at least had her brothers and sister around, but it just wasn’t the same. Wherever Mama and Daddy Johnson were, Maddie hoped they were alive. And she hoped they were thinking about their kids. Reaching out with her good hand, the young woman readjusted a strand of garland that the wind had blown loose, then stepped back to admire the tree, its thick evergreen branches ornamented with glittering bright colors. The colored lights danced off her dark jacket. She smiled. It wasn’t perfect, but it was the best the colony could provide, given the scarcity of supplies. She heard the scuffle of shoes on the concrete walkway and turned her head in the direction of the sound, the smile disappearing to be replaced by a look of questioning wariness. She hadn’t told Caitie where she was going, just that she was going for a short walk. Sing Sing at night — even if there was still some light to see by — wasn’t nearly as dangerous as New York City or Memphis, but it still wasn’t the safest place to be wandering on her own. Especially considering the colony’s reputation for skeevy happenings. Maddie blinked in disbelief when she saw who it was. “Micah?” The older woman had been assigned guard duty often during her time spent at Grand Centeral. That, coupled with the fact that she’d saved the Johnson family’s life, had earned her the family’s respect and friendship. When Maddie and her siblings moved to Sing Sing, she didn’t think she’d ever see the woman again. “What the hell are you doing here?” She asked, not rudely. “When? And… why?” |
