"Really," Jax said, lifting his eyebrows and looking comically defiant. He'd front until the very end, just because that was how he was. There was more to him than the boisterous self-confidence he showed on the outside, but it took a bit more time to get down to the rest of it. Probably, Nick had a better chance than some people here of seeing it; he'd talked to her more than he had most of the others.
"Tell me about it," he said when she asserted that a weird friend was better than a bitchy one. He could attest to the fact that guys could absolutely be bitchy at times, though not necessarily in the same way as girls. Random conversational asides were great, but in all honesty, he was much more interested in the Nick-had-never-been-kissed one. He was feeling pretty decent right now, warm from the liquor he'd taken in, slightly buzzed and happy. Anything seemed possible at this moment. "I am so totally not desperate," he protested instantly. "Never have been, never will be." Okay, so maybe there wasn't a whole high school full of eligible girls here, but that didn't mean there weren't any others. He'd seen other girls who were nice-looking and couldn't have been too far from his age.
"Whatever," Jax said to her last, moderately snippy statement, rolling his eyes a little. And suddenly he knew just what to do, although the alcohol was certainly helping him to make his decisions right now. Smiling a little, he leaned toward her and planted his lips on hers. She could easily push him away; he wasn't being obnoxious or tongue-thrusty about it, and the main reason for that was that he didn't want to lose her friendship if she objected to his sudden impulse action. But man, nobody should have lived through the zombie apocalypse and never experienced kissing.
