It was good that, even with everything else that was going on, Rae hadn't lost her affinity for Christmas. Yeah, there was a little of a tough stigma on it now—it would have been the one year anniversary of her relationship with Elliot, after all—but with EJ's birth and the fact that April was with she and Lucas now, it was a little easier to focus on the good instead of the bad. At least that was what she told herself. She stood back and looked at the tree with an approving smile. She and Topher had decorated it together, and she was rather pleased with the result. Rae had picked one of the larger boxes of decorations, with many different types of ornament in it, so it wasn't some uniform, bland tree or anything. It was exciting; it had character. Those types of things were what made Christmas to Rae. Quirky, fun, traditions that made the holiday fun. After examining the tree, she turned her attention to Topher and smirked. “Looks like the best Christmas tree I've ever seen.” An exaggeration, maybe, but it was true in the moment, so why not say it? With the tree done, and all the other decorations in the room hung (Rae had been sure to include all denominations, just so that no one felt left out), she beckoned for him to follow her. It was after hours and the cafeteria was more or less empty, sure, but she'd left the dinner she'd prepared for them in the back. “Dinner's in the back. If you're hungry,” she told him, as she grabbed EJ's car-seat-turned-carrier from a nearby table. Besides, she thought, if I'm going to tell you what I plan on telling you, I'd really rather not do it here. It may have been a near empty room, but there were still people there, and Rae didn't want to embarrass herself in public again. The only other person around to see it would be her son, and he wouldn't know what was going on. Rae looked at EJ with a little smile as she walked into the kitchen. He was sleeping like an angel, and she couldn't help but grin a little at that fact. “Thanks, by the way,” she started, “for coming by to help me out today.” |
