It had been awhile since Caitie had been this upset. Or, really... it wasn't so much upset as it was worried. She'd told Maddie the truth. Just come out and said it. She liked girls, and Maddie... was one of the girls she liked. The only girl—the only person—she liked right then. Since then... they hadn't really talked. Maddie hadn't said a whole heck of a lot to her in general, and when they did talk, it felt like Caitie's presence, having Caitie around, was a bother. Maddie had never said that, and Caitie was sure she never would, but... what she feared was happening. Her stupid feelings, her stupid crush, was getting in the way of the best friendship she'd ever had.
She sat on her bed—her brother and Maddie's brother had gone to get two beds for them, even though Caitie was more or less sure that Maddie was going to leave now, stop being friends with her and never talk to her again or whatever—and stared at her hands, waiting for Maddie to get back from wherever she'd gone.
That, though, was when she heard the knock on the door. She raised her head and looked at the door, smiling a little when she heard Everett's voice. Just who she needed to see right then! Jumping off the bed, she quickly strode across the room, avoiding Chick and Duck on the way and pulled the door open. She tugged her brother inside and into a hug, as she closed the door behind him. “Hey! I was wondering when you'd come by again.”
