When Maddie made her suggestion, Caitie couldn't help but laugh. “No, if you don't want me to decorate your part of the room I totally won't,” she shrugged a shoulder and bit her lip, glancing around the room with a smirk. “It should probably have touches of both of our personalities, anyway, right?” she added, leaning sideways against the wall and holding her head high. She felt pretty good about herself. Proud. She was in an apartment with an awesome roommate... even at the end of the world.
For Caitie's part, she was beyond glad that Maddie hadn't noticed, really, the awkwardness between them. As much as she was considering telling her friend about her feelings, that didn't mean that she was ready for it quite yet. Worry still poked at her mind. Maddie was cool about a lot of things—she was understanding and accepting about stuff that even her brother and sister hadn't understood—but that was just the thing. What if this was the one thing she didn't understand? Caitie really didn't want to lose that type of friendship, just because of a crush that she was more or less positive that Maddie would never reciprocate.
Fear was dumb like that. No matter what logic and “the right thing to do” told you, fear told you something different.
“I dunno,” Caitie admitted. “But it'll be fun to try, won't it? If anyone can do it I bet we can.” They made a pretty awesome team, so obviously they'd be able to do it. At least she hoped so. “I bet it takes us like... a month. Chickens and ducks are smart. And I'm pretty sure they don't want to poop all over the place if they can avoid it.” She'd seen people with pet ducks before, and chickens usually kept their pooping space to a specific spot in their coop. At least the ones on the compound did.
The quacking made Caitie laugh and look at the fuzzy little yellow duck with amused and adoring eyes. “He's crazy,” she said, both do Maddie and Duck, with a smirk on her face. The question turned her attention back to Maddie and she thought for a moment. “Umm... I'm probably more like Joey than you. Dumb and stuff.”
