Maddie didn’t want to admit it, but having George irritated with her the night before hadn’t been what she’d expected. And it had kind of hurt seeing her friend chatting nicely with the Stripper. Whatever stick was up George’s ass, it just brought out more questions and more uncertainties. Too many people hated her because of her grudge against the Stripper, and Maddie was just… tired of it. Tired of defending herself. Tired of arguing her opinion with the few people she liked. The grudge wasn’t worth being hated, so maybe being civil was the only solution. She’d been known to give in to peer pressure, to jump on the bandwagon if it helped her make friends, and with all these other weird feelings and crap cropping up, maybe forcing a change in attitude was what she needed. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time she had to pretend to be nice to someone. The new room was awesome. It wasn’t too big, but it was definitely a huge step up from the drafty, dirty cell with the toilet-turned-table. Finding beds would be the problem, but mattresses on the floor would work until then. Greedy people had claimed all the movable beds and there really wasn’t any way to take the beds out of the cells and move those. But the room was nice. Maddie flopped down on her mattress and stared up at the ceiling. Apart from some old mold stains, it wasn’t unsightly. She glanced over at Caitie. “This is cool,” she said. “We should totally put some of those glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling.” |
