Leah had no good excuse for her attitude, which strengthened her desire to retreat. As much as she wanted to see EJ, she wasn’t exactly in the best emotional state to do so. She was the raincloud fucking up an otherwise sunny day. Sighing, she brushed a hand down her face. “I didn’t come here to argue with you, and I’m sorry that it’s turning out that way.” It was no small relief that there wasn’t an audience present for this blowup. Leah felt ashamed of herself.
She moistened her lips and had to actively work to keep her tone level. “So just because you and Brandon can’t stand each other, means you don’t consider him family? He’s my brother…” She wasn’t sure where she was going with that explanation, but it felt like it needed to be said. “I just found it odd that you only mentioned George. She can’t even stomach the thought of being an aunt…”
Stubbornness won out and Leah took a step away from Evan. With the way she was acting, whether it was irrational or not, she didn’t deserve to be comforted. An impatient hand raked her hair back from one side of her face. “Maybe it would be better if I just came back another time to see EJ. Babies can sense a person’s mood. I don’t want to upset him.”
“And I know I said it yesterday, but I should probably say it again. I wasn’t doubting your leadership decisions. Just worried that the stress would change you…” She trailed off and gave a shaky laugh. “Apparently I’m the one who’s changing.” She shook her head, before turning to leave. “Mari misses you, so I might be home later today. If you want me to come back.”
