“Yes. I know.” She knew how morning sickness worked. Ducking her head, she cleared her throat. Leah didn’t want to have this conversation. Her presence was making things uncomfortable on a day that was supposed to be celebratory. “Either way, it’s good that he wasn’t early after all. Or that he was on time. Whichever. I’m sure he’s beautiful.”
Leah shrugged. “I’m here if she wants my help, although she’s got no end of capable helpers already.” Jealousy was a fickle thing. She wasn’t going to admit to it. Didn’t even want to admit it to herself. It was petty and unfair, which was another reason she was hanging back. Not getting in the way and putting a damper on the excitement. She was thrilled for Rae, she really was. It was just… difficult to deal with when it felt like her own baby was being ignored.
Rae was a dear friend, but not part of Leah’s family. They weren’t close enough to be considered such, but then, everyone had a different definition for what family meant. “You forgot Daniel. And Brandon, Lilah and Kori. They’re your family,” she pointed out, maybe a little too harshly.
Leah averted her gaze from Evan and hugged herself. There were few times in her life where she wished she could disappear, or at the very least erase a few past moments. What started off as a disagreement over Evan’s leadership abilities, had evolved into something else, and she wasn’t liking the person she was turning into. She swallowed thickly, her eyes flicking around the room. Searching for… answers, maybe. Or a resolution to her problems. Things had been so much easier when she’d been cold-hearted. She almost felt like she was going a bit insane.
“You said Rae was sleeping,” Leah said, not following. “I’d like to see EJ, but I don’t want to disturb anyone.”
